EDGE NETWORK MONITORING

Monitoring that doesn't stop when your network connection does.

Edge NMS runs at every site, polling devices, evaluating alerts, and notifying your team locally — fully independent of whether the link back to Central is even up.

What Edge NMS Is

Self-Sufficient Monitoring Node for Every Site

Edge NMS is the site-level monitoring layer of our NMS platform. It's deployed once per physical site — a factory floor, a railway station, a branch office — and takes full ownership of everything happening there: polling every device, evaluating every threshold, and firing local alerts the moment something needs attention.

It is not a thin client waiting on instructions from a central server. Edge NMS makes every real-time decision locally. Central NMS adds cross-site visibility on top — it is never a dependency for Edge NMS to do its job.

What Edge NMS Actually Does

Six components, one site, zero blind spots
  • Polling Scheduler

Triggers every device's poll on the interval defined by its Monitoring Profile — some devices every 60 seconds, others every few minutes, all configurable.

  • SNMP Client

Issues GET and GET-BULK requests, manages SNMPv3 session state, and applies structured timeout/retry logic (5-second timeout, 3 retries with exponential backoff) before ever marking a device down.

  • Trap Listener

Runs alongside scheduled polling as an always-on async listener, catching device-initiated notifications the instant they happen — closing the blind spot between two poll cycles.

  • Local Time-Series Store

Buffers readings and pending events locally, so nothing depends on a live connection to Central just to keep recording what's happening.

  • Rules Engine

Evaluates every reading against its Monitoring Profile's thresholds in real time, right at the site — not after a round trip to a central server.

  • Local Notification Dispatcher

Fires SMS, siren, or local-dashboard alerts immediately, using site-specific notification channels that keep working even during a full WAN outage.

Why This Architecture Matters

A WAN outage should never mean a monitoring outage

Most monitoring failures aren't caused by a broken sensor — they're caused by the network link to wherever the monitoring "brain" lives going down at the worst possible moment. Edge NMS is built specifically to remove that failure mode:

When the link comes back, Edge NMS backfills Central's dashboard automatically. The only thing a WAN outage costs you is temporary visibility from Central — never monitoring itself.

How Edge NMS Is Configured

Four building blocks. One live asset

Every monitored device is defined by four essential building blocks. Once configured, Edge NMS automatically begins monitoring using the assigned settings.

Site

Defines where the device is physically deployed, including its division, zone, platform, and location details.

Credentials

Securely stores encrypted SNMPv3 (or legacy SNMPv2c), SSH, and API credentials, assigned to each device without hard-coded secrets.

Device Type & OID Template

Defines the device type and maps its SNMP OIDs to meaningful metrics for accurate monitoring.

Monitoring Profile

Applies a reusable set of metrics, polling intervals, thresholds, and alert rules to every device of the same type.

Once these four components are in place, the device goes live. Edge NMS starts polling automatically based on the assigned monitoring profile, while alerts are routed through the site’s configured credentials and notification channels—without requiring per-device configuration.

Edge NMS vs. Central NMS

Different jobs, same platform
Edge NMS Central NMS
Device polling Full ownership Never polls devices directly
Threshold evaluation Real-time, local Consumes pre-evaluated events
Local alerting Independent of WAN link N/A

Built for Environments Where Downtime Isn't an Option

From factory floors to railway platforms

Edge NMS is deployed anywhere a site needs monitoring that keeps working on its own terms:

  • Manufacturing plants — Production-line controllers, safety systems, and industrial displays, all polled locally regardless of central IT connectivity.
  • Railway & transit infrastructure — Our speciality Edge NMS instances at each station keep passenger information systems monitored even when the division-level link drops, with safety-weighted alerting for boarding-critical hardware.
  • Distributed enterprise sites — Branch offices, warehouses, and remote facilities where a flaky WAN link shouldn’t mean losing visibility into what’s actually happening on-site.

Technical Summary

Under the hood

Protocols

SNMP v2c (legacy support) and v3 (default, authPriv preferred) for polling; async UDP trap listener; REST API north-bound to Central NMS

Polling Cadence

Configurable per Monitoring Profile — typically 60 seconds for critical infrastructure, up to a few minutes for lower-priority devices

Failure Detection

3 consecutive failed polls (with exponential backoff) before a device is marked Down -- filters out single-packet loss without delaying real detection

Data Retention

Short-term local buffer sized to comfortably outlast a typical WAN outage, with full replay to Central on reconnect

Security

SNMPv3 by default, encrypted and site-scoped credential storage, read-only polling posture (SNMP SET disabled by default)

FAQs

Does Edge NMS need a permanent connection to Central NMS to work?

No. Edge NMS is fully self-sufficient for its own site — polling, threshold evaluation, and local alerting all continue independently of whether Central is reachable.

What happens to data collected while the link to Central is down?

It's buffered locally and replayed to Central in order once connectivity is restored. Nothing is lost — Central's dashboard simply catches up.

How many devices can one Edge NMS instance handle?

Sized to the site — a small branch office and a large factory floor have very different device counts, and the polling engine scales accordingly. Ask your account team for guidance specific to your site profile.

Can Edge NMS monitor devices from multiple vendors?

Yes. Polling is protocol-based (SNMP, heartbeat, custom checksum endpoints for display/content verification), not tied to a single vendor's hardware.

Do I need one Edge NMS per site, or can one instance cover multiple locations?

The standard model is one Edge NMS per physical site, specifically so a problem or outage at one location never affects monitoring at another.
